The house (by Rabitranath Tagor)
"I was strolling alone into the country road as the sun was avariciously hiding his last, golden rays.
Daylight started to die down little by little, giving way to deep darkness. The reaped land was lying silent,
like a widowed lady stained with tears.
All of a sudden, the sharp voice of a child pierced the air, a voice unseen, leaving the song to fade away
behind, in the dim light of dusk.
His little cottage was situated on the fringes of the deserted land, beyond the field where the sugar-beets
grew, veiled in the shadows of the banana tree and the areca, the Indian walnut tree and the green jack.
For a moment I stopped walking, giving a brief end to my solitary stroll under the starlit sky, and I came
to witness before me the dark land embracing with her arms countless houses laden with cots and beds,
maternal hearts and night lamps, little lives brimming over with a joy ignorant of each own value for all
men alike".
